"I took this photograph of my mother just after I had bought my first camera. I was 25; she was soon to turn 60. It was the last summer before we knew she had cancer. It was a time of innocence and naïveté: a casual moment, my mother, with a warm smile.
The letter is about being lonely and making do with less than perfection, i.e. my father who let the TV do the talking for him.
I want my children to know about my mother, her decorating quirks, her colour sense, her love for her cat/kittens, her humour, and most importantly, her ability to make do with less than perfect."
