Memories of her childhood in northeastern Pennsylvania inspired Abby Vakay to design and hook Just North of Scranton. Some of her favorite places and activities have been incorporated into the design, including farms, cows, horses, apple orchards, Christmas trees, and fox hunting.

Abby planned the colors and dyed the wool for her rug. "Fall always shows a spectacular display of warm colors, so I allowed the season to dictate my color scheme," she says. "Dyeing for this rug was a joy. The fall trees inspired me to spot dye and use onion skins. The pines were cooler blue-greens, while the village homes were eight shades of white achieved by gradation dyeing, and the brick community house [was] a tweed, overdyed. The variety of dye techniques kept this rug moving along."
