April DeConick drew this design for the Kirby Hooking Circle's 2010 Celestial Challenge. "I knew I wanted to hook a sun with a face," she said. "My inspiration came from ancient artisans and how they depicted feelings of dread and awe in their portrayals of ancient gods and angels."

April color planned the rug, dyeing each of the colors in an 8-value swatch in a method she created and named Palette Dyeing. "All seven colors in the sun were created by mixing yellow with other colors on the color wheel, so the colors are related to each other on the most basic level," she said. "This creates a very harmonious and striking effect." The wool strips for the sun and the rays were dyed over white wool; the background is textured wool over dyed with brown.
