"Masterful Morris is the first rug I did with my teacher Peggy Hannum. It was my first day in her class and she had me look at catalogs to choose a pattern. At the end of class, she asked if I found a pattern I liked and I showed her Masterful Morris. She took a deep breath and said if that is the one that excited me, that is the one I should do. I found out years later that it was the first rug she color-planned!
The next month, I got the pattern and wool and started working on it. I couldn’t get the concept of shading. It wasn’t until I went to a rug hooking camp and had a teacher looking over my shoulder all weekend that I finally learned how to shade. It will always be one of my favorite rugs because you can see my journey from not understanding shading (the center motif) to the outer edges where I finally “got it." I thought about reworking the center flower but decided not to because it’s a record of my journey into fine shading."
