"Life has many roads leading in, out, or away from the main highway. But fiber artist Jo Ann Hendrix's road is one continuous path that represents a person's journey. That journey is shown in Roger's Rug; a design that signifies her husband's early life—from childhood to scouting to sliding down a slope. 'It's also the name of the first double black diamond ski slope that he ever skied,' Jo Ann says. 'It is located in Vail, Colorado, where we have vacationed together.'

Jo Ann admits that it took some effort to come up with a motif that flowed effortlessly from one life-scene to the next. She knew tha thte highway needed to be prominent enough to lead the viewer on this journey but subtle enough not to distract from the scenes. Jo Ann selected a fine texture for this purpose. Another challenge came from the green background. These areas served as resting zones and also created the illusion of depth in the rug. Even after careful selection of light- and dark-valued greens, Jo Ann had to do some reverse hooking to achieve the desired results."
