Teddy Bear Picnic Rug, 36" x 57", #9- and 10-cut hand-dyed and as-is wool on linen. Designed and hooked by Judith Dallegret, Montreal, Canada, 2011.
Montreal artist Judith Dallegret fell in love with rugs many years before becoming a rug hooker.
“I spent the summers in my great-grandmother’s home by the sea in Nova Scotia. It was a magical place with gas lamps, an outhouse, water from a spring, beautiful gray-mauve walls, sheep in the yard, a cold cellar, a pantry with mice that got into the jam, an organ to play, and on the floors, beautiful rugs hooked by grandmother Charity Rose. That is where my love of rugs began.”
Judith feels a connection to her grandmother through hooking: “Memory and story rugs are part of why I love to hook.” Her roots and family history are looped into the rugs she creates.
