Gears and Clocks and... Wool?

The wild, wild world of steampunk

By: Donna Hrkman

Steampunk Reverie, 33" x 46", #3- and 4-cut wool on linen. Designed and hooked by Donna Hrkman, Dayton, Ohio, 2014.

Once upon a time, many years ago, I had what is known as “free time.” Oh sure, I was busy making hooked rugs, writing, managing a family, and all that. But I still had days, whole days when I could play at something different. I chose scrapbooking.

I love scrapbooking. I would select a themed scrapbook paper collection and cut up the papers and rearrange them into small journals. It’s the same theory as quilting, where you take a perfectly nice piece of fabric and cut it up and reassemble it into something even more wonderful. And some of my favorite themed papers were based on steampunk art, which I had never seen before.

That’s how steampunk came into my life and became a theme in my rug hooking.
