Hidden Objects Rug Design
Geometrics that fool the eye
By: Stefan Dull
Hidden Lion, 22" x 16". Watercolor paper and art markers. Completed in 1985.
About 30 years ago, I signed up for a basic drawing and design class. I enjoyed arts and crafts my whole life, so I was excited to see what buried talents might be revealed. This was when I learned a technique of graphic design that I call “Hidden Object.”
The concept was really pretty simple: choose a simple focal subject, draw a grid on top of the object, and design each individual square as a unique piece of art. The smaller squares would come together to form the final artwork. We were given special water-absorbent paper and were instructed to use watercolor markers to fill in the squares.
