Painting with a Hook

The challenge of hooking snow

By: Kate Thornhill

Prairie Winter, 26" x 18", #6-cut wool and wool yarn on linen. Designed and hooked by Kate Thornhill, Long Reach, New Brunswick, 2017.

Hooking snow sounds easy, right? After all, snow is white. Or maybe not.

An article in the January/February 2017 issue of Rug Hooking, “The Night Visitor” by Karen Larsen, described the challenges of hooking snow. I was preparing to do this piece I call Prairie Winter around the time this article came out, and I found the information particularly interesting. Another article described how to document the process of creating a hooked piece so that you could share your progress with others, so I followed that advice too and photographed each step in the creation of Prairie Winter.
