Taking Aim at the Games

Ontario Rughooking Guild Takes Aim at the 2015 Pan American/Parapan American Summer Games

By: Maureen McIlwain

Canada, Eh? Designed and hooked by Lynn Goegan, Sturgeon Falls, Ontario.

The Pan American/Parapan American Games encourage young athletes to overcome physical, mental, and developmental obstacles as they vie for gold, silver, and bronze medals. When the Games were secured for Toronto, a group of civic-minded individuals started Ignite Toronto 2015. The goal of the Ignite program is to “inspire communities throughout Toronto, the region, Ontario, and Canada to come together and build excitement around the Games and bolster community spirit.”

Lorna Atkins, a former area representative for the Ontario Hooking Craft Guild (OHCG), devised a way to participate in the games. She and Marjorie Duizer proposed that OHCG members hook one small rug for each of the 41 competing countries; the small mats would be reminders of the teams’ and athletes’ time in Canada.
