Texas Postcards

The Dallas Firehouse Rug Hookers

By: Martha Reynolds / Photography by the Artists

Texas Postcard, 30" x 17". #7-cut wool on linen. Designed by Nola Heidbreder (from her Postcard series) and hooked by Ann Deane, Richardson, Texas, 2017.

In the spring of 2017, The Dallas Firehouse Rug Hookers challenged its members to hook a Texas postcard rug. It could be a commercial pattern such as Nola Heidbreder’ s (Let Nola Do It); a design by one of our own members, Jane Willard; or an original design. All of these rugs were part of the challenge to see how different people hooking the same patterns would interpret the style and design without a teacher or classroom assistance.

We gave ourselves six months to complete the rugs, and we planned a date for the big reveal. Eight enthusiastic members pulled out their hooks and started to work immediately.

The wonderful detail in each rug is interesting, and each rug is unique. Notice the sculpting in Linda’s rug on the longhorn’s tail, the star in Texas, the D in the Reunion Tower, and the leaves of the yellow rose—that sculpting is no doubt why she took a ribbon at the Texas State Fair for this rug in 2017.

Our Texas Postcard project was a labor of love from start to finish. I hope you enjoy the results!
