When you grow up in the Green Mountains of Vermont, you appreciate the seasons. In fact, you could say the seasons are on steroids. Winter is fresh, crisp, and white, dappled by the beautiful evergreen trees and sprays of color our feathered friends provide as they forage. Green makes a strong presence again in the summer with the gorgeous rolling mountains. Spring is a mixture of soft pastels as the flowers pop against the brown of mud season, and fall . . . oh fall, where do I even begin?

I am a newly retired 26-year Army veteran’s wife and have lived in several locations throughout the country, but when I cross over the border into Vermont during the fall, the countryside around me still takes my breath away. The colors of the mountains are otherworldly. I now live in upstate New York, and the feeling of fall is the same. It’s time to build up that woodpile; thoughts drift to a good pot roast in the crock pot, apple pie, pumpkins, and sunflowers.

Pumpkins and sunflowers—nature has provided us with two of the “warmest” subjects to work with, and when you add wool to the mix, magical things happen.
