Ann Sale is my first cousin, Dick is her husband, and Francie is their dog. Ann and I grew up together in Richmond, Virginia. We have always been close in spirit if not in where we lived. We have kept in touch through all the years since our childhood. Recently she wrote that they had acquired a new dog, so I asked her to send me a photo of her.
I enjoyed hooking the blue shirt because I like to hook clothing. The eyeglasses were probably the most difficult. I have hooked quite a few dogs, so Francie was fun. Here again, I used some purple-grays instead of black in her fur for shading. I struggled a bit to find the right wool for the sunny light in the background, but I think that what I found adds vigor to the portrait. I collect wool from various teachers and sources as I travel for workshops so I have a large stash from my many years of hooking.
