The Case of the Vanishing Paisley

By: Vicki Cameron
The Paisley Project

It was a normal September day, normal for 2020. We were in a full COVID lockdown. I had nothing but sky, trees, and grass to fill my days. They didn’t blast at the nearby quarry, so there were no gravel trucks rumbling by, giving me something to complain about. There were no chainsaws revving, no lawnmowers running, and no leaf blowers creating tiny tornados.

My only hope for human contact was a walk to the mailbox. What would I find? A fantastic offer from a big box company offering to sell me blinds so I couldn’t see the sky, trees, and grass? Or a come-hither advertisement for a Quonset hut, suitable to store a chainsaw, a lawnmower, and a leaf blower? Or this week’s copy of the Rant Rag, a local newspaper with a ranting editor and strident ranting letters to the editor? No, what I had in my mailbox was a copy of Rug Hooking Magazine. I was saved.
