Hooking windows on the past

Val Carter saw her first hooked rug at an arts-and-crafts show in Charleston, South Carolina. She was drawn to the 2' by 3' mat depicting a dark horse on a light golden background—a weathervane. It was for sale, but for more than she wanted to spend. She was not new to fiber arts, having learned at a young age how to sew clothing from her mother and later developing skills as a quilter and cross-stitcher. She figured she could learn how to hook.
