Among rug hookers, there is little argument that the legacy left by the legendary Pearl K. McGown is extraordinary. In addition to introducing rug hooking to a broader American audience, she also produced more than 1,000 original designs, refined the use of color in her patterns, wrote extensively on the subject, and encouraged countless teachers and other devotees to support the creative craft.

What is somewhat more murky is the story behind a series of patterns McGown produced each holiday season during the mid-20th century for her teachers and, some say, her best customers, in gratitude for their support.
