Maryanne Lincoln's Comprehensive Dyeing Guide is one of the best dying books out there especialy for beginners. When I was learning to hook and dye I had the honor of talking to Miss Lincoln on the phone. She was very kind, encouraging and helpful and she gave me the gainsboro red formula that is briefly mentioned in the book.
