Hearts for a February Home
Combine applique, rug hooking, and embroidery for a project you will love!
Hearts, 28” x 21”. Appliquéd, embroidered, and hooked with #8-cut wool. Designed by Rebekah L. Smith, hooked by Cindy Sullivan, 2017.
This project is all about blending. It was inspired by the idea that you could take two different styles of wool work and put them together to create a unified piece. While hooking and wool appliqué have been combined before, I wanted to go in a different direction by lifting the appliqué to balance out the finished piece.
Hearts are one of my favorite motifs, and I felt they were a good place to start. They are simple and can be used in an endless variety of ways. As the appliquéd hearts take center stage, the hooking is by no means secondary. It is important that you have a striking background. In this piece, we used hand-dyed wools for movement and dimension. My good friend Cindy Sullivan did all of the hooking on this project.
