When Jeanne Benjamin started hooking Chi Chi, she didn't expect to find extraterrestrial beings in an Oriental rug pattern. "I began in the middle of the rug with what I called the 'aliens,' as they looked like motifs from early computer games," she said.

Jeanne color planned the rug using wool that she had previously dyed from her own formulas. She didn't have a good color photograph of the finished piece to work from, but she did have an excellent mental picture of what she wanted. All of the strips she chose were cut from 100% over-dyed wool--some of it new and some recycled. "I just pulled from my considerable stash until I was happy with the combination," she said.
