"This portrait of my father’s grandparents seemed to go quickly and easily, as I remember it, because it was so much fun to hook. My father had recently had a stroke and could not express his thoughts in words. I knew that it was one of his favorite photographs, so when I took the finished project to show him at the nursing home, he laughed out loud with joy. That was a very touching moment for me.
I liked the portrait of the elderly couple in front of their home on their sheep farm in Gladys, Virginia. I hooked a small blue-checked wool that a dear friend had given me for her gingham dress. With my ever-growing stash of hand-dyed greens, I explored hooking various types of trees.
Family lore was that my aunt and uncle had taken the photograph on their honeymoon in July, so the reason that the shutters on the house are closed was to keep the sun out.
Being selected for Celebration III was beyond belief for me and encouraged me greatly to keep working in the pictorial genre."
