"My Mémère—A Strong Woman is one of my favorite rugs because this is my French Canadian great-grandmother. She raised my father, braided rugs, sewed her own clothes, tatted lace, grew fruits and vegetables, raised chickens, made her own feather bed, etc. I love it also because this hooking, my first hooked portrait in which the subject faces the viewer, really looks like her. I had a terrific time sculpting my Mémère’s features with 11 shades of flesh color and hooking the dress that I see in my mind’s eye whenever I think of her. This piece was a Reader’s Choice."
