On the morning Fumiyo was to take a sightseeing trip to Boston, she woke up early, walked into town, and discovered the charming antique store now depicted in her rug. The store was not open, but its exterior enchanted this visitor from Japan. "I looked at the store from the outside," she recalls. "It was small but very curious. I took pictures, and I made a pattern from my sketch using the picture."
But Fumiyo did not rely solely on her photo and, being the creative person she is, incorporated some interesting features of her own. She added the rocking horse, the sheep, and the teddy bear in the toy cart that are pictured in front of the building and placed pieces of china behind the windowpane. These imaginary items made the work more interesting for her, she says, because she thought about what it would have been like for people to use these objects many years ago.
