Jan Winter has been interested in Pennsylvania Dutch arts and Fraktur paintings for many years. A class with Fraktur expert and rug hooker Susan Feller provided the inspiration for this rug.
Jan planned all the colors but went through many changes, especially where the background was concerned. At first she dyed parchment-colored wool, then she tried a lightly mottled wool for a watercolor look. Both efforts seemed too pale. She overdyed a houndstooth and cream wool texture with a slightly darker tone but decided it was still too light to support the darker reds and oranges. She finally found an off-the-bolt stripe that had the perfect texture and depth of color.
