"I was so delighted to find this picture of my paternal grandmother as a young woman in a swing, wearing a lovely summer dress with blue (guessing) ribbon running though the edges. It was playful and so different from the woman I knew as a child when she seemed stern. The photograph was taken in the early 1900s at her home in Ashland, Virginia.
I found a picture in a magazine of a summer garden that I used for the background. It allowed me to add many colors in the flowers. Trees and flowers give me an opportunity to experiment with shading and texture. I particularly like to hook clothing, and her dress was a good one. I used shades of white to grays for the folds and highlights."
