Sunset from A’Cioch
Hooking Movement and Depth in a Monochromatic Cloudscape
My great uncle, Ben H. Humble (1903–1977)—Uncle Bennie, as he was known to us—had a loud voice, an even louder sneeze, and always made me and my siblings laugh. He also had a special handshake for us, and although we knew that he was deaf he always seemed to know what we were thinking. Ben lived for the Scottish hills—climbing, photographing, and writing about them, and in 1971 he received the MBE from the Queen in recognition of his lifetime contributions to mountain rescue. My father inherited Ben’s belongings after his death, and among the artifacts was a framed 15½" by 22½" black-and-white photograph of a sunset: Sunset from A’Cioch, was taken by Ben at the Isle of Skye in 1936.
